Frequently Asked Questions

What types of projects do you specialize in?

We specialize in high-end custom cabinetry and other built-ins. In addition to the “typical” kitchen and bath cabinetry, we have completed many bunk room projects, library walls, mud rooms, wood counters, entertainment centers, display cabinets, and specialty cabinets you can’t get anywhere else. Aside from cabinetry, we also specialize in tabletops, live edge projects, floating shelves, and barn doors.

How long does a typical project take?

Most projects take 3-4 months from initial consultation to completion. This includes design development, shop drawing creation, manufacturing in our facility, and professional installation. Timeline can vary based on project complexity, material availability, and your specific requirements. We always meet the timeline of your project, whether it is needed in less than 3 months or even a year or more away.

Do you offer free consultations?

Yes! We provide complimentary consultations where we discuss your vision, assess your space, and explore design possibilities. During this meeting, we'll review your style preferences, functional needs, and provide preliminary concepts for your project. Generally the first 2 to 3 proposal revisions for your project are complimentary, and we may ask for a deposit to secure your business after that while we continue to drill into details.

What makes ACW different from other cabinet makers?

We focus on artisan-level craftsmanship combined with thoughtful design and exceptional customer experience. Every piece is handcrafted in our Durango facility by skilled cabinet makers and woodworkers who take pride in creating functional works of art. We're not just building cabinets - we're creating heirloom-quality pieces that tell your home's story. And our customer service is absolutely top notch.

What materials do you work with?

We work with premium hardwoods, high-quality plywood, TFL (thermally-fused laminate), and specialty materials depending on your project needs. We are highly versatile when it comes to the materials we use since we source materials specifically for your project. All of our cabinetry is made from full 3/4” construction for the cabinet boxes and joined using traditional dados (grooves into which another piece sits tightly). There is no stronger cabinet box.

We source our materials from trusted suppliers that are FSC certified.

Our spray finishing expertise allows us to provide exceptional paints and protective finishes. Stains and oil finishes on natural wood are hand-rubbed by our experts.

Do you have a showroom we can visit?

We don’t have what you may think of as a traditional showroom. That’s because we are a fully custom shop and make everything specifically to order for individual customers. But we can meet at our workshop to view finish samples and give you a tour of our working facility. Since your project will be catered to your exact needs, we provide detailed renderings so you can envision your completed project digitally. You can also review our portfolio of completed projects to see work we’ve done before, but we are always dreaming up new ideas with our customers, as we will with you!

Can you work with my architect or designer?

Absolutely! We collaborate seamlessly with architects, designers, builders, and contractors. We can work from existing plans or help develop design concepts that integrate perfectly with your overall project vision.

Do you handle installation?

Yes, we handle professional installation through our experienced full time Install Manager. We ensure every piece is perfectly positioned and functions flawlessly. Our installation process includes final adjustments and quality checks to guarantee your complete satisfaction.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Durango and the surrounding Four Corners region. Our team travels throughout Southwest Colorado to deliver and install our custom work. You’ll most often find us in Durango, Silverton, Pagosa Springs, Telluride, Cortez, Bayfield, Mancos, and everywhere in between.

How do you ensure quality?

Quality is built into every step of our process - from material selection and shop drawing development to handcrafted construction and professional installation. We stand behind our work and remain committed to your satisfaction at all times.

Can you create pieces that match existing woodwork?

Matching exisiting woodwork and finishes is a challenging process. Paint matching is no problem at all, but stains take on very different characteristics on different wood and over time. We do our best to match existing finishes, wood species, and design details as closely as possible. We provide samples prior to building the project to ensure you will be satisfied.

What if I have a unique or challenging space?

Unique spaces are our specialty! We love solving design challenges and creating custom solutions that maximize both beauty and functionality. Our experience with everything from historic homes to modern mountain retreats means we can adapt to any architectural situation. We’ve built wine cellars in bedrock basements, library walls in secret lofts, and hidden cabinets beneath staircases - what challenge do you have for us?

How do we get started?

Simply contact us to schedule your complimentary consultation. We'll discuss your vision, assess your space, and provide you with a clear understanding of possibilities, timeline, and investment level. From there, you can take all the time you need to decide if we're the right fit for your project.

Do you work on commercial projects?

Yes, we absolutely work on commercial projects. We’ve done office cabinetry, desktops, decorative accent walls, unique reception desks, hotel kitchens, and more.

What's your design process like?

Our process begins with understanding how you live in your space and what you want to achieve. We create detailed shop drawings and 3D renderings that ensure every measurement is precise and every detail is considered before we begin construction. You'll know exactly what you're getting before we start building.
